De Holanda was born in Recife, 11 of February of 1919. Bachelor in Legal and Social Sciences for the Law school of Recife, dedicated literature to it, to the journalism and the publishing production. He participated of the Theater of the Student of Pernambuco (TEP) and in 1936 started to write stories. He taught the History of the Brazilian Theater and Graphical Arts, in the School of Beautiful-Art of Recife. In 1954, together with Aloísio Magalhães, Jose Laurenio de Melo and others, he established the Amateur Graph, a group of artistic vanguard that had as its objective to create books as art objects. The group dissolved at the beginning of the military regimen, produced a small amount of books of drawing and printed material of good quality. In 1972, Gastão of Holland settled Rio De Janeiro. The loose sheet consists of production notes on the book stating that this single sheet structure was based on a tunnel book created by Carlton B. Lees in 1977. Half of the text describes a delicious lunch and the other half is critical of the meal. Each page depicts an illustration of an item on the menu that is handcolored by Hutchins. Scope and Contents As indicated in a 1985 exhibition catalogue sponsored by the British Arts Council, the idea for a new codex appears in the first notebook as part of the Central School teaching programme: like a Mexican codex in concertina form but 'applied to modern wrapping paper, one side only'. The notion lay dormant for many years but from 1972 its advances and vicissitudes are chronicled in the notebooks. Wright was working at that time on his article 'The Essential Book'. Peguy was the exemplary craftsman: for him 'a book meant a total commitment to social and spiritual truth. . . . A book meant writing, editing, printing, proof correcting, publishing and even opening a bookshop in the Rue de la Sorbonne'- the making and the message were inseparable.In an article written in a 1991 issue of Eye magazine on Wright's work, the form of the codex - is quite roughly made and free of grand summarising gestures.
